There are two main islands -- Pulau Perhentian Besar (&lt;st1:placename st="on"&gt;Perhentian&lt;/st1:PlaceName&gt; &lt;st1:placename st="on"&gt;Besar&lt;/st1:PlaceName&gt; &lt;st1:placetype st="on"&gt;Island&lt;/st1:PlaceType&gt;) and Pulau Perhentian Kecil (&lt;st1:placename st="on"&gt;Perhentian&lt;/st1:PlaceName&gt; &lt;st1:placename st="on"&gt;Kecil&lt;/st1:PlaceName&gt; &lt;st1:placetype st="on"&gt;Island&lt;/st1:PlaceType&gt;) -- plus several large rocky outcrops to the northeast namely Pulau Tokong Kemudi Barat (&lt;st1:placename st="on"&gt;Tokong&lt;/st1:PlaceName&gt; &lt;st1:placename st="on"&gt;Kemudi&lt;/st1:PlaceName&gt; &lt;st1:placename st="on"&gt;Barat&lt;/st1:PlaceName&gt; &lt;st1:placetype st="on"&gt;Island&lt;/st1:PlaceType&gt;), Pulau Dara Kecil (&lt;st1:placename st="on"&gt;Dara&lt;/st1:PlaceName&gt; &lt;st1:placename st="on"&gt;Kecil&lt;/st1:PlaceName&gt; &lt;st1:placetype st="on"&gt;Island&lt;/st1:PlaceType&gt;), Pulau Tokong Kemudi (&lt;st1:placename st="on"&gt;Tokong&lt;/st1:PlaceName&gt; &lt;st1:placename st="on"&gt;Kemudi&lt;/st1:PlaceName&gt; &lt;st1:placetype st="on"&gt;Island&lt;/st1:PlaceType&gt;), Pulau Rawa (&lt;st1:placename st="on"&gt;Rawa&lt;/st1:PlaceName&gt; &lt;st1:placetype st="on"&gt;Island&lt;/st1:PlaceType&gt;), Pulau Burung (&lt;st1:placename st="on"&gt;Burong&lt;/st1:PlaceName&gt; &lt;st1:placetype st="on"&gt;Island&lt;/st1:PlaceType&gt;) and Pulau Serenggeh (&lt;st1:place st="on"&gt;&lt;st1:placename st="on"&gt;Serenggeh&lt;/st1:PlaceName&gt; &lt;st1:placetype st="on"&gt;Island&lt;/st1:PlaceType&gt;&lt;/st1:place&gt;). &lt;/p&gt;  &lt;p&gt;Typical of most tropical islands, the two main islands are heavily forested and ringed with white sandy beaches. Being far away from the mainland, Pulau Perhentian, which literally means '&lt;st1:place st="on"&gt;&lt;st1:placename st="on"&gt;Stopover&lt;/st1:PlaceName&gt;  &lt;st1:placetype st="on"&gt;Island&lt;/st1:PlaceType&gt;&lt;/st1:place&gt;', is rich in coral and marine life which includes stingrays, nudibranchs, black corals, moray eels and colourful fishes. Turtles come up to lay eggs between April and September.&lt;/p&gt;  &lt;p&gt;The main village is situated on the southeast coast of &lt;st1:place st="on"&gt;Pulau  Perhentian Kecil&lt;/st1:place&gt; and the locals are a friendly and hospitable lot. Accommodation is mainly aimed at budget travellers and is available on both the main islands as well as some of the smaller islands. New resorts with better facilities are currently being constructed.&lt;/p&gt;  &lt;p&gt;Perhentian is one of the best diving spots in &lt;st1:country-region st="on"&gt;&lt;st1:place st="on"&gt;Malaysia&lt;/st1:place&gt;&lt;/st1:country-region&gt;, and is also excellent for snorkelling and jungle trekking. Its laid-back atmosphere makes it the perfect getaway. &lt;/p&gt; &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-weight: bold;"&gt;Getting there&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;span style="font-size: 12pt; font-family: &amp;quot;Times New Roman&amp;quot;;"&gt;The departure point for all ferry rides to the islands is Kuala Besut, a tiny fishing village about 1 - 2 hour's drive from Kuala Terengganu or 30 minutes from Kota Bharu in Kelantan. If you're from &lt;st1:city st="on"&gt;&lt;st1:place st="on"&gt;Kuala Lumpur&lt;/st1:place&gt;&lt;/st1:City&gt;, it's best that you take a flight to Kota Bharu and take a bus or charter a taxi to Kuala Besut. Alternatively, you may take a bus from &lt;st1:city st="on"&gt;&lt;st1:place st="on"&gt;Kuala Lumpur&lt;/st1:place&gt;&lt;/st1:City&gt; (the journey takes about 9 hours) to Kuala Besut and ask the driver to drop you at the jetty.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;span style="font-size: 12pt; font-family: &amp;quot;Times New Roman&amp;quot;;"&gt;There are a few companies providing ferry services to the islands. You may choose to take the fast boat (30 minutes) or the slow boat (45 minutes - 1 hour), and let the boatman know which island you intend to stop at. In the 19th century, Terengganu became a vassal state of &lt;a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Siam" title="Siam"&gt;&lt;span style="text-decoration: none; color: rgb(0, 0, 0);"&gt;Siam&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/a&gt;, and sent tribute every year to the King of Siam in the form of &lt;i&gt;bunga mas&lt;/i&gt; (a tree with flowers and leaves made of gold). Under Siamese rule, Terengganu prospered, and was largely left alone by the authorities in &lt;a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bangkok" title="Bangkok"&gt;&lt;span style="text-decoration: none; color: rgb(0, 0, 0);"&gt;Bangkok&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/a&gt;. The untouched tropical rain forest in Taman Negara is among the oldest in the world. The construction cost of RM350,000 was derived from public donation as well as contributions from various Buddhist associations in &lt;st1:country-region st="on"&gt;Malaysia&lt;/st1:country-region&gt; and &lt;st1:country-region st="on"&gt;&lt;st1:place st="on"&gt;Thailand&lt;/st1:place&gt;&lt;/st1:country-region&gt;. &lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span class="bodytext"&gt;The &lt;span style="font-weight: bold;"&gt;Wat Phothivihan &lt;/span&gt;reclining Buddha is 7 meters longer than the older reclining Buddha of &lt;span style="font-weight: bold;"&gt;Wat Chaiyamangklaram &lt;/span&gt;&lt;a href="http://www.asiaexplorers.com/malaysia/penang/watchaiyamangkalaram.htm"&gt;&lt;span style="color: rgb(0, 0, 0);"&gt;&lt;span style="font-weight: bold;"&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/a&gt; in Penang .
